The book Female Identities in the Musical Life of Austro-Hungarian Sarajevo, by Dr. Lana Paćuka, commended by the the Pauline Alderman Awards

The Musicological Society of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is pleased to inform the public that The International Alliance for Women in Music, based in the United States, has announced the winners of The Pauline Alderman Awards for 2020 in the field of research that contributes to the importance and significance of a woman in the art of music.

The book Ženski identiteti u muzičkom životu austrougarskog Sarajeva [Female Identities in the Musical Life of Austro-Hungarian Sarajevo] (publisher: Academy Music, Musicology Institute, University of Sarajevo, 2019, design: Sandro Drinovac) Dr. Lana Paćuka, an Associate Professor of the Academy of Music, Univerisity of Sarajevo, was nominated for the PAA on behalf of the Musicological Society of FBiH. The book was awarded the title of "highly commended" (a work that receives special attention and recognition) with two publications backed by the Oxford University Press. Pauline Alderman Awards was established in 1985 by the International Alliance of Women in Music, as a recognition that pays tribute to one of the first musicologists in the world - Dr. Pauline Alderman (1893-1983).

Lana Paćuka is one of the younger generation of Bosnian musicologists and music writers. From 2014 until 2019 she was the editor-in-chief of the Journal for Music Culture Muzika, the only indexed musicological journal in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She is currently holds the position of the head of the Department of Musicology and Ethnomusicology at the Academy of Music of the University of Sarajevo. She has presented scientific papers at symposia organized by the Musicological Society of FBiH, IMS and ICTM, in BiH, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic. During 2019, she was part of the expert team for the inscription of sevdalinka on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Lana Paćuka has over 25 published scientific research papers, while the book Female Identities in the Musical Life of Austro-Hungarian Sarajevo [published in Bosnian], for which she received this acknowledgement, is the first and only musicological monograph in the country and region that deals with gender and the importance of women in music.
