String Orchestra

String Orchestra of Academy of Music of University of Sarajevo has been working within the Department of Stringed Instruments and Guitar since 2000. The formation of the orchestra was initiated by Dean of the time and violin professor Faruk Sijarić and cello professor Yevgeny Xaviereff. For the seventh year in a row, assistant professor Belma Alić has been the orchestra artistic leader. The ensemble consists of present and former students of Department of Stringed Instruments of the first and second cycle of studies who express a particular liking for chamber music making.

The orchestra’s musical expression is focused on the selection of some crucial pieces written for a string ensemble and which refer to the ages of Baroque, Classicism, Romanticism and the 20th century. Thus, string orchestra of Music Academy has performed about a dozen of contemporary compositions as premieres in BiH. Orchestra particularly highlights performances of pieces by BiH composers. Covering a wide range of styles and continuously attempting to offer, to the audience, a complete artistic experience in the form of high-quality program and first-rate performance, String Orchestra has grown into one of the most promising ensembles in Bosnia and Herzegovina, whose activity is characterized by an enviable artistic level. It is proven by the fact that String Orchestra has been performing orchestral programs of music festivals of decisive importance for Sarajevo musical life, such as May Music Festivities, Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival, and a series of concert activities within the Concert Season organized by Academy of Music of University of Sarajevo. Besides Sarajevo, Orchestra has had prominent appearances in other BiH musical centers (Banja Luka, Zenica, Tuzla), and in countries of the region.
